Optimising Conference WiFi

If your clients frequently complain about slow WiFi speeds or trouble connecting, it’s time to consider upgrading your WiFi network.

Managing Bandwidth is crucial. You don’t want a few users consuming all the available bandwidth, so applying Quality of Service (QoS) settings helps prioritise essential traffic.

The Number of Devices connected to each access point. Conference attendees typically connect multiple devices (e.g., smartphones, laptops). Ideally, you want as many devices as possible to connect using the 5GHz frequency band, which offers more channels and less interference than the congested 2.4GHz band. Ensuring that no more than 50 devices connect to one radio will help maintain optimal performance, but this number varies depending on the hardware used.

Proper Placement of Access Points You want attendees to connect to the nearest, most appropriate access point for their location, not one far away across the room. Using directional antennas can help create focused coverage and reduce interference. It’s essential to design the network so it optimally handles traffic throughout the entire venue, especially in large, open spaces like conference halls.

Backend Systems such as switches, firewalls, and controllers. These components are just as important as access points in delivering a high-performance network. Switches need to be able to handle the power requirements of the access points, and that there are adequate links between switches and firewalls to support high throughput. A well-configured WLAN controller can detect interference or access point failures and adjust accordingly in real-time, ensuring continuous, reliable service.
