What is Network Design?

Network design involves the layout and structure of a network, covering both physical and virtual components. A well-thought-out network design is crucial because it directly impacts performance, security, scalability, and ease of troubleshooting. As businesses become more reliant on their networks, a solid design ensures the system can adapt to new technologies.

Network design is broader than network topology. While topology refers to the arrangement of network elements like nodes and connections, network design also considers business goals and outcomes. Types of network topology include ring, mesh, and tree, each offering different configurations for connecting devices. A network topology is considered during a network design.

Creating a network design typically starts with mapping out all assets, users, and devices through a network diagram. This visual representation includes physical connections, device locations, IP addresses, and security structures. For new networks, the design process begins by listing all components, while for existing networks, current infrastructure and workflows influence the design, ensuring minimal disruption during deployment. Collaboration between security, product, and user experience helps shape the final design. If you want bespoke network design services, speak to our team.

Network Design Services

Performance Networks offers network consultation, network design, full procurement, network installation and managed services on all Local Area Network (LAN) , Wide Area Network (WAN) and SDWAN designs. We design networks for many different businesses, whether single site SMB, large campuses or a multi-site enterprise level setup.

This can include firewalls, IPS, URL filtering, anti-malware, authentication and Network Access Control (NAC).

Your network needs to work in accordance with your working practices. Do you use cloud APPs exclusively or on-site servers? Or are you hybrid but plan to move to full cloud in the near future?

These different setups may require different core switch setups or different access layer switches as PoE requirements change frequently. But don’t worry we’ll go through this to fully understand how your “traffic” flows and build and design a network that is fully future-proof.

Maximising Your Existing Infrastructure

We evaluate your current network setup to see where we can save you money. If your existing cabling, firewalls, switches, routers, or servers are still up to the task, we’ll aim to incorporate them into the new design. Our thorough audit of your existing network allows us to offer practical advice on best utilising what you already have.

Planning for Future Capacity

Understanding your long-term capacity requirements is crucial. We’ll discuss your vision for the next 5-10 years and how you plan to work, which will help us determine the necessary traffic flow and network infrastructure. Based on this, we’ll recommend the hardware and software that will support your growth and ensure your network remains robust and efficient well into the future.

Network Infrastructure Design

Network infrastructure design involves carefully planning a business’s network setup before implementation. A well-designed network infrastructure is essential for running critical applications and ensuring smooth business operations. It includes routers and switches, software applications, and network services. By structuring your network efficiently, you can ensure reliability, safety, scalability, and high performance.

Good infrastructure design also helps you address operational needs proactively. With proper planning, including network monitoring and remote management, you can maintain connectivity, increase visibility into network performance, and quickly scale as your business grows. Tools like WiFi Heatmaps for network topology and configuration provide valuable insights, making it easier to adapt to changes and optimise performance. If you are looking for a provider who can design your network to work for you now and ensure its scalability for the future, speak to our team today.

What Our Customers Are Saying

"We were grateful that Performance Networks pulled out all the stops to deliver a project within a very tight timescale and to budget. From the planning to the implementation, the Performance Network team worked closely with the BISC IT team, ensuring what was provided best suited the BISC’s needs. And even when things did not go to plan, the Performance Networks team adapted quickly to the new situation and came up with alternative approaches which delivered the same objectives to the same cost. The rural location and older buildings with their associated infrastructure make any BISC IT project a challenge, but Performance Networks overcame every obstacle without hesitation, delivered as promised and followed up with post-implementation support which was unfailing. We would happily turn to Performance Networks again for future projects."

Sarah Butler – Librarian and Head of Learning, BISC

"From the first point of contact Performance Networks have been amazing. They are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to networks and WiFi and are able to turn a complex topic into something simple and easy to understand. I can’t recommend them enough to anyone who needs a new network or is experiencing performance or connectivity issues with their existing network."

Steven Bennett, Head of IT, Manchester Central

"Performance Networks’ knowledge and expertise on WiFi solutions were invaluable to us during this huge and complex upscale project, and we are delighted with the work they have completed over the last few months.” “We’re really pleased to have completed this project, which is quite an undertaking and brings the technical infrastructure of our 19th century Palace very much up to speed with modern-day requirements."

Nick Johnson, IT Manager, Alexandra Palace

"Performance Networks resolved a complex ongoing WiFi issue in one visit; they are fast to respond and highly professional. We have since engaged them for further WiFi consultancy and thoroughly recommend their services."

David Jackson, DHL

"WiFi is now only an issue if it’s not available – and these occasions have been very few and far between. Access Points are remotely monitored so that Performance Networks can inform management if there is a problem even before they’re aware. Guests have a support line to call in case of difficulty. Performance Networks has helped Ragdale Hall to update its infrastructure to meet the requirements of the business, which is more and more reliant on technology. Guests and suppliers want instant communication, they need banks to provide immediate authorisations. All of this depends upon a stable platform, with excellent response when issues arise. As with WiFi, Ragdale Hall’s staff are only concerned when the technology gets in the way of providing outstanding customer service. Performance Networks have provided that stability and have been pro-active in ensuring that Ragdale Hall maintains and improves its systems."

Keith Palmer, IT Systems manager Ragdale Hall

"I have worked with several WiFi providers over 15 years at CCT, and Performance Networks are the only one who have truly understood the needs of our organisation. With three large conference centres that experience high guest footfall, our WiFi requirements are significant. Performance Networks have delivered a solution that meets our needs fully. I’ve been really impressed with their service after the installation too. They monitor our entire network and their support is second-to-none, proactively identifying and resolving issues before we’re even aware of them! I’m confident to say that our WiFi is sector-leading, which has a huge impact on guest experience."
